That small quibble aside, the text and art are a good match. While they fit the spooky theme, a few of them are hazy enough to be slightly distracting. Illustrations are done in a fuzzy outline style that makes them appear not quite solid. Could the school be alive? Are all the students in danger, or is it just Sam the school wants? When a play draws all of Eerie Elementary together in one location, the school makes its move. After nearly being swallowed by quicksand and then attacked by a fire hose, Sam is ready to find answers. He doesn't count on the school itself being enemy number one. He figures it will be a boring job and probably one that earns him enemies.

School Library Journal - Gr 1–3-Sam is Eerie Elementary's newest (and only) hall monitor. The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (09/14) Number 1-Sam Graves discovers that his elementary school is alive and plotting against the students, and, as hall monitor, it is his job to protect them-but he will need some help from his friends. It’s not super scary but it definitely is creepy.Physical Description: 90 p., ill., 20 cm. I think it would be a perfect read for kids just starting to read beginning chapter books who enjoy creepy horror-type scary stories. Overall this a cute and creepy beginning chapter book with some wonderful pictures. The story overall is creepy and cute I enjoyed it. The pictures throughout the book are excellent, they add a lot to the story and are really well done. My son said that the book “Kinda’ freaked me out” but he (like his mother) has a great imagination and, as a result, a low tolerance for creepiness. The ideas are a bit creepy but I never thought it got too scary. Sam is tasked with defending his classmates against this evil and living school. However during his first stent as Hall Monitor he finds out that Eerie Elementary is a much scarier place than he originally thought…in fact it may be alive. The story is about a boy named Sam Graves who is forced to be a dreaded Hall Monitor. That being said this was a very short read that would be perfect for those kids who are starting to read beginning chapter books.

Then he gave it to me to read (it took me about 10 minutes to read). So this book sat around for a bit until he picked it up last night and quickly read it (he is 8 years old and it took him maybe 30 min to read). Unfortunately (or fortunately) he moved through beginning chapter books phase very quickly and is now on to series like the Spirit Animals and Wings of Fire. I got this book for my son to read back when he was starting beginning chapter books.
